WEEK #14

K4 this week learned and practiced striking an object with a long handle implement. We first warmed up to a movement song called Sammy. We then used plastic candy canes to manipulate a deck ring. We finished class playing a gamed called Drive Away.

K5 this week exercised by learning the movement skill of rolling. We first warmed-up with an activity called Five Noses. We then learned and practiced underhand rolling with wiffleballs and bowling pins. To finish class, we played an activity callled Try to Catch a Snowman.

1st grade warmed up this week playing a cardiovascular activity called Knockout. We then used plastic candy canes to learn how to strike with a  long handle implement. We then played Hockey Tag. To finish class, we played Hockey Scat Cat.

2nd grade this week also did the cardiovascular activity called Knockout. We then practiced moving in self space and general space with a game called Beep Beep Times Up. We finished class participating in the activity called Sharks and Dolphins.

3rd grade this week also participated in the cardiovascular activity called Knockout and finished class playing the game called Try To Catch a Monkey. We used hockey sticks, noodles, and deck rings to play this fantastic game.

4th grade this week learned and practiced the skill of overhand throwing. We first warmed up by doing a muscular strength and muscular endurance activity called Wipeout. The song Wipeout by Safari was used to guide us through the activity. We finished class playing a game called Smash the Turkey.

5th grade this week reinforced one of the five levels of fitness called Body Composition. We played the game called Energy In and Energy Out to help us learn it better. We then started our hockey unit by learning some basic puck manipulation skills. We ended class playing the game called Hockey Tag.

6th grade this week continued their badmintion unit. We warmed up with an activity called Same And Different. We then reviewed the movement skill called the overhand clear. We finished class practicing the skill of serving and playing the activity called Dead Fish!!

7th & 8th grade this week continued their hockey unit. We started class playing the cardiovascular game called Wipeout and/or Hockey Tag. We then practiced some hockey skills with partners and finished class playing Goalie Ball and/or Gotcha.

WEEK #13

K4 & K5 this week exercised to the activities called I See...You See..., Go Touch, Beep Beep Times Up, and Turkey Catcher!! We discussed that you don't really need a ball, jump rope, or equipment to exercise. All you really need is your body!!!

1st grade this week learned the gross motor skill of rolling. We started class playing Do What I Say Not What I Do. Next we played an activity called Five Noses where we discussed what our locomotor skills are. We finished class practicing the skill of rolling with an activity called Try To Catch A Turkey.

2nd & 3rd grade this week warmed-up to a song game called Wipeout. We then practiced the motor skill of overhand throwing and played the game called Smash the Turkey.

4th & 5th grade this week reviewed the five levels of fitness with an activity called Musical Fitness (4th grade) and learned the fourth level of fitness called body composition with an activity called Body Fat Tag (5th grade). We then finsihed class playing a fun activity called Try to Catch a Monkey.

6th grade this week started their new unit, Badminton. We practiced and learned basic birdie and racket skills and finished class playing 2-on-2 Knockout. Our warm-up was called Quickdraw. Here we reviewed the first 3 levels of fitness.

7th/8th grade this week started class playing Multiply Tag where we review cardiovascular endurance and its importance in being physically fit. We then continued learning some basic hockey skills such as dribbling and passing. We finished class playing a hockey game with gator balls called Hockey Tag.


WEEK #12

K4 this week learned and talked about the functions of our muscles, as well as, the physical skill of overhand throwing. We exercised to the song Give Me Ten, practiced throwing overhand, and played the classic game called Clean Up Your Backyard.

1st grade this week participated in and exercised to activities that required no equipment. We played I see...You see..., Go Touch, Beep Beep Times Up, and Turkey Catcher.


2nd grade this week learned and practiced the physical skill of catching. We warmed-up with the song Give Me Ten, practiced catching, and played Bombs Away.

3rd grade this week continued learning about the five levels of fitness. We reviewed cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance & strength with the activity called Fit Tic-Tac-Toe. We then learned and practiced the foot skills of dribbling, trapping, kicking, and passing. We finished class playing The Fox & Hound.

4th grade this week learned about body composition which is one of the five levels of fitness. We reinforced this level of fitness with activities called Energy In & Energy Out and Body Fat Tag.

6th grade this week reviewed the level of fitness called body composition and started our new unit which is  Badminton. We started badminton with basic birdie and racket orientation skills. We finished class playing 2-on-2 Knockout.

7th/8th grade this week finished their community building unit and started our new unit which is Hockey. We participated in activities called Good Morning Nice To Meet You, Comfort Zone, Mine Field, and Hockey Tag.

WEEK #11

1st grade this week started class learning about our muscles and what we can do to keep them healthy!!! We followed that with a muscle song called "Give Me Ten." The movement skill for the day was overhand throwing. We practiced the skill and played the classic movement activity called Clean Up Your Backyard.

3rd & 4th grade this week reviewed three of the five levels of fitness with the activities called One Step Behind and Quick Draw. We then celebrated fire safety week with an activity called Fire Fighter. Here we praticed the skill of underhand throwing and discussed fire safety.

7/8th grade this week learned and reviewed the fifth level of fitness called Flexibility. We then reviewed the Pickle Ball skills we have been learning for the past several classes. We finished class playing the game of Pickle Ball. This was also the last week of the first quarter for 7th/8th grade.

WEEK #10

Our Annual Halloween Obstacle Course

K4 - 5th grade all had the opprtunity to participate in Fairview's Annual Halloween Obstacle Course. Before participating, the students were reminded that the obstacle course would have us exercising the Five Levels of Fitness. Throughout class, students were frequently questioned on what stations had certian levels of fitness.  Because of teachers convention this week, we will have to continue the course next week Thursday & Friday so that all the students may participate.



7th & 8th grade this week learned about the level of fitness called body composition. We started each class with activities that reinforced this fitness level. We played Energy In & Energy Out, as well as, Body Compostion Tag. We then conitnued to learn and practice hand-eye coordination gross motor skills for Pickle Ball. Game play will start next week!!

WEEK #9

K4 this week started class with the activity called Monster and then finished class celebrating fire safety month with an exercise activity called Stop, Drop, & Roll Tag. In this activity, we practiced what to do when there is a fire.

K5 this week started class with a muscular strength and endurance movement song called Give Me Ten. We learned and practiced the gross movement skill of overhand throwing and finished class playing the game Clean UpYour Backyard!!

1st grade this week started class with an activity called Step Right Up. Here all the students had a chance to be a Physical Education teacher and lead their group in a warm-up. We learned the difference between an exercise and a stretch. We then practiced and learned the foot skills of dribbling and kicking. We finished class playing The Fox & The Hound.

3rd grade this week played Odd & Even Tag and learned about muscular strength & endurance at the same time.  We then learned and practiced the skill of overhand throwing and played Ghostbusters to reinforce this skill.

4th grade this week used medicine balls to review the concept of muscular strength & endurance. We then learned and practiced the skill of overhand throwing and played the acitivity called Ghostbusters to reinfocre this skill.


7th & 8th grade this week learned about muscular strength & endurance and started their striking with implements unit called Pickle Ball. We practiced our hand-eye coordination with some movement drills to help lead us to the actual game of Pickle Ball.

WEEK #8

1st & 2nd grade this week played an activity called Step Right Up for their personal fitness time. Here all the students had an opportunity to be the Physical Education Teacher. We then practiced the foot skills of dribbling and kicking. We played London Bridges and Guard your Ghost. With these games students had the opportunity to practice these gross motor skills.

4th grade this week continued to learn and participate in the 1st level of fitness called Cardiovascular Endurance. To reinforce this level of fitness, we played an activity called Clothes Pin Tag. We then finished class playing an activity, called Titanic, where we practiced the gross motor skill of throwing overhand.

5th grade this week reviewed two of the five levels of fitness. They played an activity called Odd & Even Tag where I incorporated both levels of fitness. To finish class we continued to practice the skill of throwing overhand with an activity called Ghostbusters.

6th grade this week started to learn about the five levels of fitness. We started to learn about Cardiovascular Endurance and played the activity called Odd and Even Tag to reinforce this level of fitness. We then went over the skill of throwing overhand and played a game called Ghostbusters to practice.

7th & 8th grade this week took their first quiz. The quiz was used to assess the students on the first two levels of fitness (Cardiovascular Endurance & Muscular Endurance) and the skills of throwing and catching. We then continued to play The activity called Flag Pass & Go.

WEEK #7

K4 exercised this week with yarn balls. We started class with a movement song called Singing In the Rain. We then manipulated the yarn balls by ctaching them, tossing clapping and catching them, etc. We finished class playing the activity called Monster. Here we pretended the yarnballs were candy and the monster wanted to catch them and eat the candy.

K5 this week participated in Monster Tag again. Here I picked several students to hide in my office. This is the Monster Cage. I then played some spooky music and had the Monters come out and crawl after their classmates. We celebrated fire safety week with an activity called Stop, Drop, and Roll. Here we reviewed what to do if we are on fire or if our house is on fire. The students who were fire fighters got to wear fire fighter hats. I used red foam balls for fire and black foam balls for smoke. This is a game the student really enjoyed.

1st grade this week reviewed the classroom responsibility "stop, look, and listen" with a song called The Freeze. We then learned and practiced the concept of self space and general space. We practiced moving in our self space to a song and then practiced moving in general space with deck rings. We then finished class with an activity called Soccer.

2nd grade this week got their personal fitness in with an activity called Step Right Up. Here each student got  a chance to be a Physical Educaion Teacher. We then discussed the skill of over hand throwing and played an activity to practice this skill called Jail Bird.

3rd grade this week played an activity where we learned about out skeletal system. The activity was called Emergency Room. Here we had to put together a skeleton puzzle. Before, during , and after we dicussed the job of our skeletal system, as well as, how we can take care of our skeletal system.

4th grade this week began learning about the five levels of fitness. This week we learned about Cardiovascular Endurance (CV). We then participated in a CV activity called Odd and Even Tag ( A big dice game). We finished class playing another CV activity called Sharks and Minnows.

5th grade this week continued to learn about the five levels of fitness. This week we discussed Muscular Endurance. We then participated in some medicine ball exercises. We finished class playing a game called Titanic where we learned about and practiced the skill of throwing.

6th grade this week continued to get ready for the Ropes Course field trip. For rhe past several weeks, we have been concentrating on cooperative learning activities. This week we played an activity called Crossing the Great River. Here students had to work together to get everyone across the gym with just a scooter and a double dutch jump rope. Fun was had by everyone!


7th & 8th grade this week finished up their throwing and catching unit. This week we continued to learn about the five levels of fitness. We also played the activities called Titanic, Pass & Go #1, Pass & Go #2, and Flag Pass & Go.

WEEK #6

1st grade this week had the opportunity to exercise with Fun Noodles!! We started class with a cardiovascular activity called Skip to My Noodle. We then had the opportunity to manipulate the Fun Noodles. We balanced, jumped, did partner activities, and made rockets with the noodles. We ended class doing an activity called Muncher. It was a fun class!

4th grade this week learned about the skeletal system and what they can do to keep their bones healthy. We started class doing an activity called Silly Exercises. We then played an activity called Emergency Room. Halfway through the activity we stopped and discussed the many ways of keeping our bones healthy. The kids seemed to really enjoy this activity.

5th grade this week went outside for class. We started with a cardiovascular activity called Sharks and Minnows. We then reviewed the skills of catching and throwing that we discussed last week and played another variation of the game called Pass and Go!

7th/8th grade this week continued their throwing and catching unit. There was rain one day so we had to stay in the gymnasium. We started class playing a cardiovascular activity called Odd and Even Tag. We also discussed why Cardiovascular endurance is important in our everyday lives. We then reviewed the cues of throwing and catching and played an activity called Pin Guard!! We really need a bigger gym for the 7th and 8th grade.

WEEK #5

K4 and K5 this week warmed-up with a movement song called "Singing In The Rain." We then reviewed the activity called I See... You See..... We ended class manipulating yarnballs and playing the acitivity called Monster.

1st grade this week excercised with Fun Noodles. We reviewed the level of fitness Cardiovascular Endurance (CV) with an activity called Skip To My Noodle. We then manipulated the noodles in many different ways. We balanced them, jumped over them, used them as rockets and caught them. We ended class playing an activity called Muncher!!!! My job is great. What a fun day!!


2nd grade this week went over the concept of self space and general space. We then played the game called Scat Cat. After this, we practiced getting into partner groups by playing a game called Body Parts. We finished class doing the activity Muncher where we continued learning the concept of self space and general space.

3rd grade this week reviewed the level of fitness Cardiovascular Endurance. We played the game Snatch to reinforce this concept. To finish class, we worked on a team building activity called Tarp.

4th grade this week concentrated on Team Building activities where we learned to become a classroom community. The activities that were used to reinforce this concept were Bears, Mosquito, Salmon Football and Tarp.

5th grade this week discussed the level of fitness called Cardiovascular Endurance with the game called Musical Fitness. Then we discussed the physical skills of throwing and catching and played the game Pass & Go.

6th grade this week began getting ready for their field trip to Potters Forest, a ropes and challenge course. We got some CV exercise by playing the game Odd and Even. We finished class with the community building activity called Tarps.

7/8th grade this week continued developing their throwing and catching skills with skill pratice and an activity called Pass & Go.

WEEK #4

K5 this week warmed-up with an activity called I see....You see... We then discussed what the job of our muscles are and how to take care of them with an activity called Muscle Fun. We finished class learning the concept of self space and general space. We practiced this concept while manipulating deck rings and playing the game called Soccer Tag.

1st grade this week learned the names of our body parts with an activity called Up Down. We then continued class with manipulating bean bags. We learned the secrets to becoming a better catcher, as well as, played the game Hot Foot.

3rd grade this week started class learning the first level of fitness called Cardiovascular Endurance (CV)with a game named Clothes Pin. We then did some partner activities called Leaning Tower of Noodles and Tug a Noodle. We finished class playing another CV activity called Mosquito.


5th grade this week focused on learning how to work together with some team building activities called Bear, Mosquito, and Salmon Football and Tarp challenges where students had to work together to manipulate a tarp.

7th/8th grade this week continued their team building unit. This week we participated in activities called Crossing The Great River and From Peace to War.

WEEK #3

K4-K5 this week learned why we come to physical education class and why we need to exercise. We warmed-up by playing an activity called Body Parts. We then exercised doing a movement story called Ladders. We finished class manipulating bean bags, as well as, playing the game Hot Foot!!


1st grade this week started class reviewing the 3 signals along with discussing the reason why we come to physical education class. During our personal fitness time, we played an activity called Scat Cat. We discussed the first level of fitness of the year called Cardiovascular Endurance. We then practiced getting into groups with a game called Body Parts. We finished class with another fun cardiovascular activity called Mosquito Tag.

3rd grade this week started class playing the activity called Exercise Task Cards. Like first grade, we discussed the first level of fitness called Cardiovascular Endurance. We then did some Team Building activities to help build classroom cummunity. These activities were called Partner Rock, Paper, Scissors Tag and Bears, Mosquito, and Salmon Football.

5th grade started the year discusssing the importance of taking care of our bodies. We played an activity called Skeleton. Here we used skeleton models and discussed the importance of taking care of our bones. We talked about the jobs our bones play and how to properly take care of our bones nutritionally and physically.



7th/8th grade started the quarter participating in some team building activities. We discussed why it's important to have physical safety, as well as, emotional safety!! We particiapted in an activity called True or False and we worked together manipulating Tarps.

WEEK #2

This year I decided to try something new for discussing classroom rules. Instead of calling my classroom exepectations "rules," I thought I would call then classroom responsibilities. I started out each class discussing what the responsibilities are for all students. But I didn't stop there, I also discussed how I, as a teacher, have classroom responsibilities as well. As always, we practiced and learned these responsibilites while doing movement activities!!!! I feel this year is going to be a great year. Fairview students are best by far. Fairview students are superstars!!!!!  Remember KEEP MOVING!!!!!

New School Year!!!!

Welcome back for another year of learning!!!
Welcome to the beginning of a new school year-a great time to emphasize the importance of physical activity in your child's education which is vital to his or her health, wellness, and academic success!!!!  Children should accumulate 60 minutes of physical activity per day. This year I will be continuing my Fairview Physical Education Web Site!!  Throughout the 2009/2010 school year, I will be posting what is being covered in your child's Physical Education class.  I will also be posting the monthly Physical Activity Newsletter, as well as, the monthy fitness calendar online at Fairview's web page. It is listed under my name in the meet the staff heading. It's Fairview's way of going green and helping our planet!! Make sure to visit often as I will constantly be adding new material to the site throughout the school year!! KEEP MOVING!!!

WEEK #38

THE LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL HAS ARRIVED!!!
Have a wonderful summer!!!!

The year has finally ended and it was personally a very long year. I'm continuing the long journey of completing my graduate program. I only have 5 months to go before my life becomes a little more normal again. I would like to wish all my students a safe, fun, and exciting summer! Remember to exercise and make healthy choices. Keep Moving!!!! I also would like to say thank you to all the parents, students, and teachers who have followed and commented on my blog this year. I hope you have learned that Physical Education is more than just kickball and dodge ball!! I hope you continue to follow my blog next year! Have a safe, fun, and relaxing summer!!!!

WEEK #37

K5 this week got their five levels of fitness in with an activity called High Five. This activity helped us develop muscular strength & cardiovascular endurance. The next activity we played was called Treasure Hunt. Here we used paper plates to get exercise. The students had to find the hidden treasure. Here is another example of how the Fairview Physical Education program is going green.

1st & 3rd grade this week went outside to exercise. Here we used frisbees to practice the frisbee throw and then played Frisbee Golf. Some basic golf etiquette was also taught. I set up a golf course using cones and tennis balls. The kids had a great time.

2nd grade this week also went outside to exercise. The students got their five levels of fitness in by playing I see...You see... and Math War. To finish class, we used crazy balls and played an activity called Crazy Ball. The students developed their hand-eye coordination, as well as,their reaction time.
4th grade this week got their five levels of fitness in with an activity called Ladders. We then used the giant cage ball and played the game Jolly Ball. With this game, we developed our kicking skills and had a muscular endurance workout!!!

5th grade this week had the unique opportunity to play softball. As most physical education teachers know, you have to be flexible when unforeseen situations occur. We took our hitting practice from last week and played a friendly game. All students could choose how to hit, either from a tee or pitched. We played for fun and did not keep score.

6th grade this week began their softball unit. Since we only have two weeks left in the school year, we went over a lot the first day. We discussed how to wear a glove, to grip a softball, how to field, and basic hitting skills. Our five levels of fitness this week was an activity called Odd or Even Tag with Dice.
7th/8th grade this week continued to develop their throwing, catching, and hitting skills. We also started to play the game of softball. However, one day this week we had to stay inside because of rain. On that day, we played Odd & Even Tag with Dice for our five levels of fitness warm-up. We finished class playing the cage ball game Jolly Ball.

WEEK #36

K4 this week worked on the concept of balance and manipulated small dome cones. We warmed-up with the song called Can You Keep Your Balance. After the song, we manipulated the small dome cones in many different ways. We finished class with a dome cone game called Statue Tag.
1st and 3rd grade this week got their five levels of fitness in with an activity called Plastic Bag Flag Tag. We then talked about and practiced the skill of overhand throwing and what accuracy means. We hung hula hoops all around the gym for practice and then ended class with an activity called Scooter Pinball.
6th grade this week was going to start their softball/baseball unit but rain forced us indoors. For our five levels of fitness, we played an activity called Ladders. This activity really develops your muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance. After fitness time, we then played a kicking and muscular endurance game called Jolly Ball!!!!

7th/8th grade this week was also forced to stay indoors. So we took a break from softball and did some team building activities. The activities were called Get the Point, Transforming, and Partner Pick-up.
