WEEK #14

K4 this week started class with a movement song called Animal Action. We then practiced our locomotor skills with an activity named Five Noses. The skill we learned and practiced this week was catching. To practice, we played a game called Catch Someone's Snowball!!!

4th & 5th grade this week are getting ready for their muscular strength & endurance fitness test with a game called Wipeout. We then celebrated Thanksgiving with a beach ball activity called Smash The Turkey!!

7th & 8th grade continued getting ready for their fitness tests by using the resistance bands for their warm-up this week!!! We then reviewed and practiced the skill of serving again. We then added some basic birdie and racket orientation drills and finished up by playing Two-On-Two Knockout.

WEEK #13

K4, K5, & 1st grade started class with a song called Give Me Ten. We then went over the basic cues of rolling a ball and played a game called Try To Catch a Turkey!!

2nd grade got some cardiovascular exercise with a warm-up activity called Wipeout (it's to the song called Wipeout). We then went over the gross motor skill of rolling a ball. To finish class, they participated in a game called Turkey Hunt.

3rd grade also got some cardiovascular exercise with the warm-up activity called Wipeout!! We then talked about, discussed, and learned the basic cues of overhand throwing. To practice this skill, we played a beach ball game named Smash The Turkey.
4th grade started class with a medicine ball workout (muscular strength & endurance). We then celebrated Thanksgiving with an activity named Try To Catch A Turkey.

5th & 6th grade this week began their fitness testing. This week we took the pacer test. This is a test that measures their cardiovascular endurance. All the students did a fabulous job performing the test!

7th & 8th grade this week started their Badminton Unit (striking with long handle implements). We started class getting ready for our fitness testing. We played a cardiovascular activity called Energy In & Energy Out!! Next, we learned and practiced the skill of serving, the most important part of badminton!!! To practice more, we played a serving game called Dead Fish!!!

WEEK #12

K4 got the opportunity to exercise with no equipment. We discussed how we don't really need toys & equipment to exercise. All we really need is our bodies!! So, all the games we played this week required us to just use the human body!! We played One Step Behind, Go Touch, Beep Beep Times Up, and Dog Catcher.

K5 got their Five Levels of Fitness in with a song called Jumping Jacks!! We then practiced our locomotor skills while learning how to find a partner with an activity named Find a Friend. We discussed the basic cues of rolling and played the game called Try To Hit a Turkey.
1st grade this week started class playing Number Scrabble. We then got the hula hoops out and manipulated them many different ways. To end class, the game Bumper Cars was played to continue our exercising using the hula hoop.
2nd grade began class playing a game called Monster. We then played a game called Stop, Drop, and Roll where we learned and practiced fire safety!!

3rd grade this week got the opportunity to go outside for gym because of some lucky warm weather that came to Milwaukee. We started class playing Rock, Paper, Scissor Tag. We then discussed the cues of kicking and played an activity called King & Queen of the Hill to end class.

5th grade began class using the medicine balls to improve out muscular strength & endurance. Then they got the opportunity to use the hockey sticks in a game called Monkey In the Middle.
6th grade started class playing a cardiovascular game called Chaos. We then continued our Hockey Unit by playing Monkey In the Middle.

7th & 8th grade this week started a new quarter. So, we started class going over the class expectations. We also played a get to know me activity called What's Different. We then took a pre-test and finished class playing a cardiovascular endurance activity called Poppers.

WEEK #11

K5 this week started class with a warm-up activity named Number Scrabble. We then got the hula hoops out and manipulated them in many different ways. We finished class playing a hula hoop game called Bumper Cars.
1st grade played Fire & Ice to begin class. We then went over the basic cues of overhand throwing and finished class playing the classic game of Clean Up Your Backyard!!

2nd & 3rd grade started class with the Five Levels of Fitness warm-up activity called The Bar Graph Workout. We then went over the basic cues of overhand throwing and played Guard Your Turkey!!
7th & 8th grade this week did a medicine ball warm-up. We then headed outside to finish up our Hockey Unit (striking with an implement) by playing Hockey outside on the grass!!

WEEK #10

K4 thru 5th grade this week all got the opportunity to participate in the annual Fairview Halloween Obstacle Course. An obstacle course was set up with the gym lights off. The students look forward to this every year and again it was a hit.
7th/8th grade this week continued with their modified Hockey unit. Again, this week the students used medicine balls for the Five Levels of Fitness warm-up. We then played an activity where we got the chance to practice our dribbling, passing, and shooting skills in a game called Monkey In the Middle!!!

WEEK #9

K4 this week started class with an activity called Fire & Ice!! We then went over the basic cues of overhand throwing and played a classic game called Clean Up Your Backyard.
1st grade participated in a muscular strength & endurance activity called Monster Tag. We then reinforced what was learned in class during fire safety week with a game named Stop, Drop, & Roll Tag. Here the students got an opportunity to practice their fire safety skills.
2nd grade this week got to participate in the annual Fairview Halloween Obstacle course!! The students of Fairview had a chance to go through the course with the gymacafetorium lights off.  A blast was had by all!!!

4th grade warmed-up this week with a math integration activity called Bar Graph Workout. We then played a rolling, throwing, and catching activity called Jailbird!!

5th grade this week finished up their Team Building unit with two activities. The first one was called Connecting Eyes and the second one was an activity called Count Off.  The focus of this weeks activities was problem solving.

6th, 7th, & 8th grade this week started their modified Hockey Unit. This week they exercised with medicine balls for their Five Levels of Fitness warm-up time. We then went over the the proper grip and what the ready position looks like. We then practiced the skills of dribbling, passing, and shooting. We finished class playing a game called Hockey Tag.

WEEK #8

K4 this week started class playing a muscular strength/muscular endurance activity called Monster Tag. We then played Stop, Drop, & Roll Tag. This game was played to reinforce what was learned in the classroom during fire safety week.

K5 started class playing a cardiovascular endurance activity called Fire & Ice. We learned the cues to an overhand throw and practiced with a game called Clean Up Your Backyard.
1st grade this week started class with a movement song called Singing In the Rain. We then exercised with yarn balls by manipulating them in many different ways. To end class we used those yarn balls and played an activity called Monster Tag.

2nd grade began class with cardiovascular endurance game called Fire & Ice. We then went over the cues to overhand throwing and practiced this skill in a game called Clean Up Your Backyard.

3rd, 4th, 5th, & 6th grade started class with a new activity called Line Graph Fitness. This activity was used to integrate math into the physical education curriculum. We then finished class playing a rolling, throwing, and cardiovascular endurance game called Ghostbusters.
7th/8th grade this week started taking their 5 levels of fitness tests. We used the fitnessgram to evaluate their current fitness levels!!! This week we did the pacer test (cardiovascular endurance test), push-up test ( muscular strength), sit-up test (muscular endurance), and the sit & reach test (flexibility).

WEEK #7

K5 this week started class with a warm-up called One Step Behind. We then learned that we really don't need equipment or toys to exercise. All we really need is our body! So, all the activities we played this week required just our body. We played Go Touch, Beep Beep Time Up, and Bippity Boppity Boo!!

1st grade this week started class with a warm-up song called Singing In the Rain. We then manipulated yarn balls and finished class playing Monster Tag.

2nd grade this week learned and practiced some foot skills. We started class with a warm-up called Carry Down & Back. We then learned and practiced the skills of dribbling and kicking with an activity called London Bridges. To finish class, we reinforced these skills with a game called The Fox & Hound!
3rd  & 4th grade this week started class playing a teacher led warm-up called One Step Behind. We then played a math game called Quick Draw. Here we had to use are adding, subtracting, and multiplication skills. We ended class playing a rolling game called Fire Fighter. In this game, we reviewed fire safety while learning the skill of rolling.
5th grade this week continued their Team Building Unit. We discussed and learned what problem solving means and practiced this concept with an activity called Crossing the Great River!!
6th grade participated in a cardiovascular endurance warm-up called Sharks & Minnows. We then continued are Flag Football unit and practiced our throwing & catching skills with an activity called Throw & Go with Flags!!

7th/8th grade finished up their Flag Football unit this week. We started each class with Sharks & Minnows for our cardiovascular fitness and then played Throw & Go with Flags. In one of the class periods, we also had our Fitness & Flag Football quiz to see what we learned and retained!!

NFL Network is looking for those life-changing PE teachers leading the fight against childhood obesity. Do you know one? We will award the NFL Network PE Teacher of the Year a $10,000 stipend, a $10,000 school companion PE grant and a trip to the NFL Draft. The NFL Network PE Teacher of the Year will also act as a spokesperson for the program in 2011, both at Keep Gym in School events and with the media.

We believe that every student should have the opportunity to participate in quality physical education. As part of the Keep Gym in School mission, we seek to increase access to in-school physical activity and to teach skills needed to establish and sustain healthy lifestyles. The PE Teacher of the Year award recognizes the role of educators in achieving that mission.

Individuals may nominate one PE teacher between now and January 31, 2011 for PE Teacher of the Year; nominations are only accepted online at keepgyminschool.com and must be received no later than 8:00 PM EST on January 31, 2011.

NFL Network will distribute grant applications to all nominated teachers on approximately February 4, 2011. Applications must be completed and returned to NFL Network by February 25, 2011. The application will only be provided to those teachers who are nominated.

WEEK #6

K4 this week started class with a movement song called Singing In the Rain. Then we reviewed I See... You See... Next we played with yarn balls and manipulated them many different ways. Our main skill focus was our catching skills. To end class, we played a Fairview Classic game called Monster Tag.

K5 this week got the opportunity to play Monster Tag one more time. We then played Stop, Drop, and Roll Tag. Here the students learned what to do if on fire or in a smoke filled room. We all then got an opportunity to be fire, smoke, or fire fighters.

1st & 2nd grade this week got the opportunity to play games and activities that require no toys or equipment. We learned that to exercise all you really need is your body. So, we started class playing I see...You see... Next we played Go Touch and Beep Beep Times Up. To end class, we played Bippity Boppity Boo.
3rd grade this week learned about the skeletal system. We discussed the primary job of our skeletal system and the many ways you can take care of it. The rest of class was used to play the activity called The Skeletal Relay or (Archaeologists/ Paleontologists).

4th grade is getting ready for their fitness test, so this week we played nothing but fitness activities. We participated in Dagger, Sumo Wrestling, and finished class with a cardiovascular endurance activity called Sharks and Minnows with flag football belts.

5th grade is continuing to get ready for the their Potter's Forest field trip. This week we worked on the team building skill of communication. We learned that there is verbal and non-verbal communication. Our team building activity for the week was an activity called Maze. Here the students had to help each other get through a building they have never been in before.
6th grade played Musical Fitness (cardiovascular endurance) to get ready for their fitness test. We then played Pass and go where the students learned to use their throwing and catching skills in a game like situation.
7th/8th grade this week also is continuing to get ready for the Fitnessgram Fitness Test.  We played Sharks and Minnows (CV), Dagger (MS/ME), and Sumo Wrestling (MS/ME). At the same time, we are also beginning to finish up our Mini Flag Football Unit by playing Pass and Go with football flags.

WEEK # 5

K4 this week learned about self space and general space!! We stated class with the game called I see...You see... We then manipulated deck rings and played Soccer Tag to learn the self space and general space concepts!!
K5 this week started class with a movement song called Singing in the Rain. We them played I See... You See.. To finish class we manipulated yarn balls and played a Fairview classic game named Monster Tag.

1st grade this week reviewed the reason why we come to Physical Education class. We then did a cardiovascular endurance warm-up called Scat Cat. We then learned how to get into groups quickly with Body Parts. To end class, we played Mosquito Tag.

2nd grade got their assigned seats this week. They also learned about the difference between an exercise and a stretch. To reinforce this, we did a warm-up activity called Step Right Up. We then finished class learning the skill of underhand rolling with the game called Jailbird.

3rd & 4th grades this week are continuing to learn the five levels of fitness!  We started class with a cardiovascular activity named Musical Fitness. We then did a community building activity called Tarps. Here students were given group challenges on how they should manipulate their tarps.
5th grade is starting to get ready for their field trip to Potter's Forest. However, first we got our fitness in. We either played Dagger or Sumo Wrestling to get our muscular strength and endurance in for the day. We then went over the Ropes Course Contract and finished class with our first Team Building Challenge called Line-up.

6th grade this week started their throwing and catching unit. We started class learning and experiencing some muscular strength and endurance games. The games were called Dagger and Sumo Wrestling. We then went over the basic concepts of throwing and catching and went outside to participate in some throwing and catching drills.
7th/8th grade this week continued to get ready for their fitness testing with several different fitness activities. We played Musical Fitness, Dagger, and Sumo Wrestling (not real sumo wrestling). We then finished class playing Pass and Go, a throwing and catching lead-up game.

WEEK #4

K4 this week had to go outside for gym!! The gym was taken away for voting. We started class with the game called Body Parts. We then manipulated bean bags in many different ways! To finish class we played a helping game called Freeze.
K5 this week began class with a movement game called I See...You See... We then manipulated Deck Rings. We rolled, spun, bounced, caught, etc. We finished class playing a kicking activity called Soccer Tag.
1st grade went outside this week because of voting in the gym. For (CV) warm-up, we did an activity named Carry Down Carry Back. We then learned and practiced the foot skills of dribbling and kicking. We did this with games called Bridge Trap and The Fox & The Hound!!
3rd grade this week started to learn about the five levels of fitness!!! Today we talked about cardiovascular endurance. We played Clothes Pin Tag to reinforce the concept. We then did some community building activities with foam noodles called The Leaning Tower of Noodle & Tug a Noodle! To finish class we played Mosquito Tag to review what cardiovascular endurance means.
4th and 5th grade started to learn about the five levels of fitness. We talked about cardiovascular endurance and played an activity called Human Rock, Paper, Scissors!! We then participated in a community building activity called Mine Field.

7th/8th grade this week started their modified flag football unit. We started class with a fitness activity called Musical Fitness. Next we went over the basic skills cues for throwing and catching a football. We then headed outside for some throwing and catching drills. Some of the drills that we did were run, expand, hike and go, hike and go go.

WEEK #3

K4 this week started class with a warm-up activity called Be My Shadow. We then learned what balance means and why we need it. We also performed many different types of balances. To end class, we played a game called Beat the Teacher. This was used to get the K4 students used to finding a piece of tape quickly!!

K5 this week started class with a game called Body Parts. We then manipulated bean bags in many different ways. To end class, we played Hot Foot! Here we practiced and learned the skill of underhand throwing by sliding the bean bags at each others feet. The students had a blast with this activity!!!

1st grade started class by doing a literacy activity called Secret Exercises. We reviewed some of the class expectations and played the game called Everyone's It Tag.

2nd grade's warm-up game for the week was an activity called Scat Cat (CV). We then practiced getting into groups quickly with a game named Body Parts. To finish class, we participated in a movement game called Mosquito Tag!

3rd grade this week started class with an activity named Quick Hands. We then started to learn the five levles of fitness. This week we started with cardiovascular endurance. We reinforced this concept with Exercise Task Cards. We then did some community building games called Rock, Paper, Scissors and Bear, Moquito, and Salmon Football.

6th & 7/8 grade this week started class with a cardiovascular endurance activity called Human Rock, Paper, Scissors. We began our first official class with a community building activity called Mine Field.

WEEK #2

This week Kindergarten through Eighth grade were introduced to the class expectations and procedures!! However, as the Fairview students know, there is no way that we are going to sit the whole class and listen to me talk. So, each grade did some games and activities where they learned the class procedures as well as got some exercise!!

New School Year!!

"A Healthy Mind and Healthy Body Equals Self-Confidence"

Welcome to the beginning of a new school year-a great time to emphasize the importance of physical activity in your child's education which is vital to his or her health, wellness, and academic success!!!! Children should accumulate 60 minutes of physical activity per day. This year I will be continuing my Fairview Physical Education Web Site!! Throughout the 2010/2011 school year, I will be posting what is being covered in your child's Physical Education class. I will also be posting the monthly Physical Activity Newsletter, as well as, the monthy fitness calendar online at Fairview's web page. It is listed under my name in the meet the staff heading. It's Fairview's way of going green throughout the school year!! KEEP MOVING!!!  Make sure to visit often as I will constantly be adding new material to the site throughout the school year!!  KEEP MOVING!!!!!!

WEEK #36

K4 this week started class with the activity called One Step Behind. We then developed our cardiovascular system and our chasing and fleeing skills with an activity called Toilet Tag. To end class, we played an activity called Treasure Hunt. Here we used paper plates with numbers and pictures to collect treasure!!!

2nd grade started class by using the Fitness Wheel. Here Uno cards are selected and the Fitness Wheel is spun to see what game or activity the class is to play. We then discussed and practiced the skill of overhand throwing and what the word accuracy means. We then played Scooter Pin Guard to practice these concepts!!!
6th grade started glass with a muscular strength and muscular endurance activity called Sumo Wrestling (nothing like real sumo wrestling!!). We then finished class playing a kicking activity called Cone Kickball (nothing like real kickball-there are no bases!!!). It is a great activity for a big group!! Here we didn't just practice the skill of kicking but we also discusssed how to use our strengths to help our team.
7th/8th grade this week developed their cardiovascular endurance with a game called Knee Tag. We then developed our muscular strength and endurance with an activity called Sumo Wrestling (not real sumo wrestling!!). To end class, we participated in an activity named Battleball. Here all students got the opportunity to experience being a soccer goalie!!!

WEEK #35

K4 this week learned and practiced the concept of Teamwork. We started class with the Fitness Wheel. Here we used Uno cards and spun the fitness wheel to see what activity or execise we would have to do!!  Next we used the parachute to again reinforce the concept of teamwork!!! Together as a class, we tried to manipulate the parachute in many different ways!!
K5 this week started class with an activity called One Step Behind. We then participated in an activity called Cookie Monster. To finish class, we played Tresure Hunt. Here we used paper plates with numbers on them to help us find treasure!!!

1st grade also started class with an activity called One Step Behind. We then went over the skill of overhand throwing. We discussed the cues of throwing and what the word accuracy means. We then finished class playing an overhand throwing game called Scooter Pin Guard.
2nd grade went outside for the first time this spring. We started class with a cardiovascular endurance and chasing and fleeing activity called Dog Catcher. We then ended class playing a hand-eye coordination activity called Crazy Ball.

3rd grade began class with a tag game called Knee Tag. We then developed our hand-eye coordination with a physical activity game called Poppers. We ended class discussing and practicing the skill of underhand hitting and rolling with the game of Battleball.

6th grade this week had to combine classes because of a field trip. So, we decided that we would exercise by playing some activities that we played in 5th grade. We started class playing Knee Tag. We then decided to play Poppers. We concluded class by playing Satellite.

7th/8th grade continued with their soccer activities. This week we participated in an activity called Dagger. We practiced our physical skills of passing, trapping, kicking, and dribbling. We ended class playing Circle Dodge one day and Cone Soccer on the other.

WEEK #34

K4 this week practiced their locomotor skills with an activity called High Five. We then learned and practiced our chasing and fleeing skills with an activity called Dog Catcher.
1st & 2nd grade this week went outside to practice and learn some foot skills. Our five levels of fitness warm-up was called Math War!!  We then went over the skill of punting and had an opprtunity to practice this skill. To end class, we played a game called Bombs Away. Here we used the the skill of kicking to try to score as many goals as possible. The students had a great time with this activity.

4th grade this week got to use the Power Walk Bands for the first time. The class did an 18 minute workout concentrating on improving our muscular strength and muscular endurance. To end class, we played an activity called Battleball. The activity works on hand-eye coordination, teamwork, and cardiovascular endurance.

5th thru 8th grade started class this week with some foot skill fitness activities. We practiced dribbling, kicking, passing, and trapping a ball (foot skills). We ended class playing a fantastic foot skill activity called Poison Ball and Cone Knockdown.

WEEK #33

K5 this week celebrated Environmental day by exercising with plastic bags!!! We discussed what recycling and reusing means. We then used the pastic bags and manipulated them in various ways. We made parachutes, rockets, and practiced movement skills. We then ended class playing Bag Flag Tag!!
1st grade this week began class with a cardiovascular warm-up called Kickdown and Carry Back. We then practiced the skills of dribbling and kicking with our feet. To end class we played an activity called The Fox & The Hound!!

3rd grade this week practiced various footwork drills to warm-up. We learned and practiced dribbling, trapping, and passing with our feet. We also discussed why these skills are important. We then ended class playing a game called Poison Ball.

5th grade this week had to combine classes because of the music festival. So, the classes had the opportunity to play games they played earlier in the year. We played One Step Behind to warm-up. The class then played Stars Wars to the actual theme song and then finished class playing Satellites.

6th, 7th, & 8th grade this week started their soocer unit. Even though I call it a soccer unit, we don't ever play the actual game of soccer. This unit really is all about developing foot skills. We use our feet in almost every physical sport or activity we play!! This week we started class using the Walking Powerbands. We exercised using all of the 5 levels of fitness by watching a video that lead us through various exercises. We then practiced some of the basic ball handling skills of dribbling, trapping, and passing. To end class, we played a circle game called Battleball.

WEEK #32

K5 this week participated in a warm-up activity called Uno Fitness. We then exercised using mini dome cones. I had the students flip, spin, roll, balance, and catch them. We ended class playing an activity called Builders and Bull Dozers.

1st and 2nd grade this week warmed-up with an activity named One Step Behind. We then played a noodle game called Star Wars. To end class, we participated in a game called Recycle and Reuse to get ready for Environmental Day which is this Friday!!!
3rd grade is finishing up their Team Building Unit this week. The word of the day was Sportsmanship. We discussed what sportsmanship looks like and sounds like. To practice this, we played Builders & Bull Dozers and Satellite. We kept score to declare a winner and a loser. We then discussed how it feels when one team wins and the other team loses.

4th grade got the opportunity to play a warm-up activity called Chaos. We then finished class with an exercise activity called Satellite. In this game, we took six hula hoops and built a sphere. Each team gets enough hula hoops to make 3 spheres each. The first team to knock them all down wins. The students had a blast playing this game. They got a great cardiovascular and muscular endurance workout while practicing their skill related fitness and physical skills.

5th grade this week finished up their fitness testing (Fitnessgram). This week they did the Sit & Reach test (Flexibility). With the little time we had at the end of class, we played a low organized game called Chaos.

6th grade started class using dumbbells for a great muscular strength and endurance workout. We then continued with our Pickleball unit. This week we reviewed our serving skills, as well as, started to incorporate some rallying practice. We finished class playing 2-on-2 Knockout.
7/8 grade this week got to participate in some games that they played when they were in elementary school since two thirds of the class was gone because of the Washington D.C. trip. Each class got to decide which games they wanted to play. Both classes decided to play Chaos and Satellite. They had a blast!

WEEK #31

K4 this week warmed-up to an activity called I see...You See... We then practiced moving in general space with a game called Charlie Wants a Home!!! We then ended class with an Environmental Awarness activity called Recycle and Reuse!!

K5 this week started class playing Uno Fitness. We then used mini kickballs and learned the difference between dribbling and bouncing. I then had the students dribble and bounce these mini kickballs in different ways. We finished class with a group game called Stuck In the Mud.

1st grade this week also started class with the activity called Uno Fitness. We played the theme song to Star Wars and played a noodle game called Star Wars.  To end class, we learned and practiced the skill of rolling and played a fun movement game called Hospital.

3rd grade conitnued their Team Building Unit. We started class with a fitness game called Bumper Cars. We then discussed the team building word of the day and played Musical Hoops (nothing like musical chairs). To end class, we participated in an activity called Loop the Loop.
4th grade had a games day due to over half the students attending the muscial festival practice. So, the students that stayed behind got to play some of their favorite games from the school year. We played Chaos and Satellites.
5th grade this week continued with their Fitness Testing (Fitnessgram). This week we did the Push-up test for Muscular Strength and Curl-ups for Muscular Endurance.

7/8 grade group A and Group B finished up doing their fitness testing. Both classes either did the Curl-Up test (Muscular Endurance), Push-Up test ( Muscular Strength), or the Sit & Reach test (Flexibility)
