WEEK #12

K4 & K5 started class reviewing the 3 jobs our muscles do for our body everyday!! They move our body, protect our bones, and help us move, carry, and lift things!!! We then used our muscles for the song Animal Action. We then went over the cues of catching and had the opportunity to practice this skill with a bean bag. We practiced catching in many different ways. We ended class playing a catching game called Snow Ball.

1st grade started class with a heart healthy song called The Jumping Jack Song. We then learned some facts about our heart and why our heart is so important. We then learned a game called the Turkey Dance!! It is a great activity to teach the concept of mirroring! To end class, we played an activity to celebrate Thanksgiving called Turkey Trot.

2nd thru 5th grade did a fitness game called Wipeout. It's played to the actual song Wipeout by the Safari's. Here the students got the chance to work on any one of the five levels of fitness. We then played a Fairview classic activity named Smash The Turkey! It is a great way to teach offensive and defensive concepts!!
6th grade even got the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving!! You're never too old to play games!!! See 2nd thru 5th grade!!

WEEK #11

K4 thru 1st grade started class with a heart healthy math integration activity named Number Scramble. We then manipulated the hula hoops in many different ways. We hula hooped, spun them, did some tricks, pogo, jumped roped, and rolled them!! We finished class playing a game called Bumper Cars!! In this game, we learned to take turns and have good sportsmanship.
2nd thru 4th grade this week began class with an activity I got from PE Universe called Shipwreck!! It is a fantastic activity to learn listening skills!! We then went over the cues of catching!! Thumbs down thumbs up!!We practiced our cues with an activity called Concentration Catch! We ended class playing a game named Island Ball. Here we got the opportunity to apply what we learned earlier in class.
5th grade this week did a medicine ball warm-up! A great way to get ready for our Muscular Strength & Endurance fitness assessment. We then talked about the concept of striking an object with another object. To experience this concept, we played a game called Try To Catch A Turkey!

6th grade this week started class reviewing the skill of serving. The cues were quickly reviewed and they then scattered off to practice. The students were reminded to do their fitness first!! Since Badminton can't be played if you can't serve, we are taking extra time in developing this skill. After serving practice, we then practiced some birdie coordination activities called Super Ups and Overhead Clears. To end class, we played a very active game called Hit & Go.

WEEK #10

K4 thru 2nd grade this week started class with a math integration/heart healthy activity called Number Scramble. We then exercised with Hula Hoops where we manipulated them many different ways. We then ended class playing a great muscular endurance activity called Bumper Cars!!!
3rd thru 5th grade this week started class with a muscular strength and endurance medicine ball warm-up. During our personal fitness time, we did Ball Slams, Roll & Go's, and Partner Stomach Crunches. We then used hockey sticks to play an activity called Try to Catch a Monkey. We learned and practiced movement strategies.
6th grade used resistance bands during their personal fitness time. As a class, we did a quick full body five levels of fitness warm-up. We began another striking unit, badminton. This week we learned and practiced badminton etiquette, the grip, some striking orientation drills, and the skill of serving. To end class, we played Reverse Dead Fish.

WEEK #9

K4 thru 1st grade this week started class with a muscle song called Give Me Ten. We learned the 3 main jobs of our muscles!! They are too move our body, protect our bones, and help us lift, carry, and move things. We went over the cues of overhand throwing and spent some time practicing our new skill. We finished class playing Clean Up Your Backyard so we could reinforce what we just learned.

2nd thru 5th grade started class reviewing the five levels of fitness using the Step Right Up Card and/or Pass It Down Cards!! We then went over the cues for catching and practiced by playing an activity called Concentration Catch. To end class, we played a game called Island Ball, a great game to learn the skill of overhand throwing indoors!!
6th grade began class reviewing the 5 levels of fitness by using the Pass It Down cards. This activity is a great way to assess the students on their understanding of the 5 levels of fitness!! We then learned and went over some movement concepts so that we could begin to playing indoor 3 Goal Sideline Hockey.

WEEK #8

K4 thru 2nd grade this week started class with a heart health activity called Fire & Ice. We then learned and practiced the cues of the skill rolling. We finished class playing a rolling game called Try To Catch a Turkey in order to practice using our newly learned skill.
3rd thru 5th grade this week started class by exercising with the five levels of fitness bar graph cards. We then went over the skill of rolling and played a game called Jailbird where we reinforced what we learned.
6th grade this week began class with a fitness activity called Partner Warm-up. We then continued learning and practicing manipulating a ball with a hockey stick. We did partner skills practice with static drills and dynamic skills. We ended class playing a game called Goalie Ball.

WEEK #7

K4 thru 2nd this week learned that all you need is your body to make your muscles, bones, heart, and mind healthy. We started class with an activity called One Step Behind. We then played Go Touch and Beep, Beep, Times Up to practice some movement concepts. We then ended class with a heart healthy activity named Bippity, Boppity, Boo where we learned to move in general space.

3rd thru 5th grade started class with a cardiovascular activity called Clothes Pin. We then practiced and learned the movement skill of rolling, as well as, fire safety concepts by playing Fire Fighter. Throughout the activity, students were repeatedly reminded to step with the opposite foot and follow through as they rolled.

6th grade started class using the medicine balls. We learned the reason why we should do muscular strength and endurance exercises and then performed some medicine ball exercises. We started using hockey sticks in order to learn striking skills with long handled implements. We ended class with an activity called Monkey In The Middle, a great activity to learn striking skills.

WEEK #6

K4 thru 6th grade has been looking forward to a Fairview tradition, The Annual Halloween Obstacle Course!!!! The whole week, I have the lights off and all the students get an opportunity to participate in the course. The students are reminded that the whole body is needed to finish and that a strong and healthy body helps them get a smart and healthy mind!!!

WEEK #5

K4 and K5 started class with a muscular strength and endurance activity called Monster Tag. We then played Stop, Drop, and Roll to learn and practice fire safety for Fire Safety Week!
1st grade this week started class with a warm-up activity named One Step Behind. We then discussed how exercise can be done without equipment and learned that all we really need is our body!!! We played Go Touch and Beep, Beep Times Up to practice this concept!! To end class, we played Bippity, Boppity Boo, The Witch Is After You!!!!! It is a great moving in general space activity!!!

3rd thru 5th grade developed their muscular strength and endurance with two games called Sumo Wrestling and Dagger!!! We then went outside to play Sharks and Minnows. This game is a perfect way to get ready for the Pacer Test. It also develops the movement skill of moving in space!!
6th grade continued to develop their throwing and catching skills with an activity called Pass & Run!!! We started class playing Sharks and Minnows to develop our cardiovascular systems!!!!

WEEK #4

K4 and K5 this week started class with a movement song called Singing In The Rain. We then did an activity named I See...You See.... to exercise our muscles, bones, heart, and mind. To finish class, we manipulated yarn balls and played Monster Tag!!!
1st thru 5th grade this week started class doing Line Graph Workout Cards. These were used to get us ready for our fitness tests!!! We then learned and practiced the physical skills of rolling and throwing overhand with an activity called Pin Guard, a Fairview classic!
6th grade this week, because of rain, couldn't continue its throwing and catching unit activities. So, we did the Pacer Test, a cardiovascular endurance evaluation, and we played Pin Guard. All the students did a fantastic job. I love all their effort!! 

WEEK #3

K4, K5, 1st grade this week started class playing I See... You see...! We then learned and practiced being in our self space with a movement song. We finished class manipulating deck rings and playing a movement game called Soccer Tag!!!
2nd & 3rd grade this week started class with a 5 Levels of Fitness activity named Musical Fitness. We then learned to use our bodies better by going over the cues of rolling and dodging for a game called Jailbird.

4th & 5th began class participating in a cardiovascular endurance game called Snatch It. We then went over how to to work as a team and did some cooperative activities. We used a tarp and the students were given some challenges to try to accomplish with their group.
6th grade this week continued practicing their throwing and catching skills. We first did a muscular strength and endurance fitness warm-up called Dagger and Sumo Wrestling (Not real wrestling). We then reviewed the throwing and catching cues and played a game called Pass & Go to reinforce these cues!!

WEEK #2

K4, K5, & 1st grade this week started class with a movement warm-up called Body Parts. We then exercised with bean bags and manipulated them in many different ways. To end class, we played an underhand sliding activity called Hot Foot!
2nd grade this week started class by reviewing the Physical Education class expectations. We then participated in a cardiovascular endurance warm-up called Scat Cat! We played a game called Clump where the students had to practice getting into groups. To end class, we practiced moving in general space by playing Mosquito Tag.

3rd, 4th, and 5th grade began class with a 5 levels of fitness activity named Meet & Greet. We then played Triangle Tag where we practiced getting into groups and we developed our cardiovascular system. To finish class, we played a game called Bears, Salmon, and Mosquito Football.

6th grade this week started class playing Meet and Greet. We then participated in a cardiovascular endurance fitness game named Triangle Tag. To end class, we did a cooperative activity called Who Am I .
The second lesson that the 6th grade had this week started with a muscular strength and endurance activity called Sumo Wrestling. We then went over throwing and catching cues and went outside for some practice drills!!!

NFL PE teacher of the year award!!!

Please nominate me for the NFL PE teacher of the year award!!!
NFL Network is looking for those life-changing PE teachers leading the fight against childhood obesity. Do you know one? We will award the NFL Network PE Teacher of the Year a $10,000 stipend, a $10,000 school companion PE grant and a trip to the NFL Draft. The NFL Network PE Teacher of the Year will also act as a spokesperson for the program in 2012, both at Keep Gym in School events and with the media.

We believe that every student should have the opportunity to participate in quality physical education. As part of the Keep Gym in School mission, we seek to increase access to in-school physical activity and to teach skills needed to establish and sustain healthy lifestyles. The PE Teacher of the Year award recognizes the role of educators in achieving that mission.

Individuals may nominate one PE teacher between September 15, 2011 and December 31, 2012 for PE Teacher of the Year; nominations are only accepted online at keepgyminschool.com and must be received no later than 8:00 PM EST on December 31, 2012.

NFL Network will distribute grant applications to all nominated teachers on approximately January 6, 2012. Applications must be completed and returned to NFL Network by February 3, 2012. The application will only be provided to those teachers who are nominated.

WEEK #1

K through 6th grade this week started the year going over the class expectations. Students were given their assigned seats, but, as my students know, I wasn't going to stand there and talk as they just sat on the floor listening. I had to get them up and moving. We used movement activities to learn the Physical Education class expectations. To start class, we did a movement name game called Replay and then played Every One's It Tag to practice the 5 expectations of my class.

New School Year!!

"A Healthy Mind and Healthy Body Equals Self-Confidence"

Welcome to the beginning of a new school year-a great time to emphasize the importance of physical activity in your child's education which is vital to his or her health, wellness, and academic success!!!! Children should accumulate 60 minutes of physical activity per day. This year I will be continuing my Fairview Physical Education Web Site!! Throughout the 2011/2012 school year, I will be posting what is being covered in your child's Physical Education class. I will also be posting the monthly Physical Activity Newsletter, as well as, the monthy fitness calendar online at Fairview's web page. It is listed under my name in the meet the staff heading. It's Fairview's way of going green throughout the school year!! KEEP MOVING!!! Make sure to visit often as I will constantly be adding new material to the site throughout the school year!! KEEP MOVING!!!

WEEK #27

K4,K5, & 1st this week started class with a movement song named Swimming or played Irish Jig Tag. We then went over and practiced the movement skills of throwing underhand and overhand!! To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, we then played Pot-Of-Gold!!
3rd grade this week began class with a new fitness activity called Confusion!!! We then continued learning the movement skills for the game of volleyball. This week, we continued to practice the skill of underhand serving!! We then played the game called Bombs Away!! This is a fantastic activity for kids learning to serve without actually playing volleyball!!

6th grade participated in the fitness activity called Confusion to begin class. We then reviewed the two-step approach for bowling! To end class, we continued to play last week's activity called High Frame!!

7th/8th started their Bowling Unit. Much of the first day was spent teaching the students how to set up the bowling lanes and learning their lane assignments. To finish class, we had a little bit of time to play a simple bowling game named High Frame!!! 

WEEK #26

K4, K5, and 1st grade started class with a cardiovascular activity called Manners tag. We then manipulated balloons in various ways! We hit them with different body parts, we pretended to play different sports, and we did various challenges. We finished class playing Manner's Tag again!!

2nd grade this week began with a fitness activity called The Fitness Grid. Here the students rolled a dice to find out what levels of fitness they would have to perform. We then played an overhand throwing game named Smash The Turkey with beach balls!! A Fairview classic!!
3rd grade this week played It's In The Cards for their fitness warm-up!! Here a few deck of cards are used!! The card they get determines what exercise each student does. We then participated and ended class with a throwing & rolling activity named Pinball!
6th grade began their bowling unit this week! Much of the first day was used to learn how to set the bowling lanes up! Each student was also given a lane assignment!! We then played High Frame to learn how to rotate so that everyone got a turn, as well as, getting to learn each others lane assignment!!

7th/8th grade this week took their 5 levels of Fitness assessments On day one, we took the pacer test!! Then, on day two we did the sit-up, push-up, and sit & reach tests!!!

WEEK #25

K4 and 1st grade this week started class with a classic cardiovascular endurance activity called Stuck In The Mud or a muscular strength and endurance activity named High Five!! Then for the rest of the class, we participated in relay races. But, these weren't your normal stand in a long line relay races. Instead, we had 10 lines with 3 students in each line. We also didn't race to see who was the fasted or who could be the winner. Instead, we had a contest to see how many different relay races we could do before class ended.
2nd grade started class playing an activity named Going For The Gold with Hula Hoops!! We then had the opportunity to manipulate the Hula Hoops in many different creative ways. We ended class playing Bumper Cars!!
During their personal fitness time, 4th and 5th grade performed Basketball Twists and BBall Shoot & Crawls!! We then praticed the skill of passing the ball. We finished up class putting all the movements skills of dribbling, passing, and shooting into an activity called Frenzy Shootout!!

7th/8th grade this week started preforming their fitness tests!!! This weed we did our cardiovascular endurance test called the Pacer Test. Every student will see whether their CV levels got better, stayed the same, or if they got worse!!

WEEK #24

K4 this week began class with a movement song called The Balancing act!! We then used recycled milk jugs to practice the skill of catching with an implement. We used yarns balls and practiced many different ways of catching. To end class, we played a movement activity called Catch A Falling Star.

K5 this week started class with a game call Stuck In The Mud. Here we reinforced moving safely in general space. We then spent most of the class doing relay races. However, we didn't just do your typical relay race. Our races were done is ten relay lines. We only had three students in each group and the class as a whole tried to accumulate as many different relay races as they could before the class ended. The student's loved it!!
1st & 2nd grade started class with a fitness activity called Not Me. We then used recycled milk jugs as gloves. We used the milk jugs and practiced catching in many different ways. We then finished class playing a game that reinforced this skill called Catch A Falling Star!!
3rd grade started class with a fitness activity called Not Me. We then reviewed the cues of shooting a basketball and practiced them. We ended class playing a shooting game named Shoot Out!

6th grade this week got the chance to truly get ready for Hoops 4 Heart!! And that's because we do it a little different here at Fairview!! For Hoops 4 Heart, we play Glow In The Dark Scooter Basketball! So, this week, we played scooter basketball with the lights on so that we could get ready for the event this Friday!! At the end of class, we discussed the difference betweening stretching to prevent injury and stretching to become more flexible!

WEEK #23

K4 & K5 this week used dome cones to get healthy!! This week, just like every week, we made our muscles, bones, and heart stronger!!!We started class with a cardiovascular activity called Hat Tag. We then took the cones and manipulated them in many different ways. We did some balancing challenges, as well as, some tossing, flipping, and spinning tricks. We then finished class playing a game called Builders and Bull Dozers!!
1st & 2nd grade this week began class with a fitness warm-up called Fitness Puzzles! Since JRFH is this friday, we played an exercise game called Healthy Hearts. Here we discussed the 5 things that make our hearts sick! We then played the game to reinforce these concepts.
3rd grade started class by participating in an activity called Deal or No Deal!! We then practiced the skill of dribbling and we used bean bags to help use the proper cues. We finished class playing the game called Dribble Flag Tag.
4th & 5th grade this week continued practicing their jump rope skills with partner jump rope tricks!! We then reviewed the skill of shooting a basketball and practiced by playing Hot Shot 2.

7th/8th grade this week started each class with some basketball fitness!! Here we used the basketballs to get fit. We did basketball squats, dribble switches, curl-up & go's, etc.  We then went over some ball handling and dribbling skills. To finish class, we played Shootout 2, Knockout, and Lay-Up and Go.

WEEK #22

K4 classes were shortened this week because of a program. However, that doesn't mean we didn't have time to get a little bit of exercise. We had enough time this week to play I See....You See.... and then finish class with a quick activity called Toilet Tag.

1st grade this week participated in a muscular strength & endurance activity named Dead Bug Tag!! We then played a game called Healthy Hearts. With JRFH coming next week, we learned about the five things you shouldn't do to your heart. That way we can make sure we stay Heart Healthy!

4th and 5th grade continued learning and reviewing some partner jump rope tricks. We started learning the movement skill of shooting a basketball! We first went over the basic shooting principles and then played Spot Shot to reinforce those skills.
7th/8th grade started class with some Basketball fitness. We did B-Ball Wall Squats, B-ball Push-Ups, and B-Ball Wall Jumps. We then went over the basic cues of shooting a basketball and ended class with an activity called Spot Shot Frenzy!!!

WEEK #21

K4, K5 , and 1st grade is finally ready for JRFH. So, this week, we reviewed the cues and practiced the basic jump rope skill. We then manipulated the jump ropes by making letters from the alphabet. To finish class, we participated in some more long rope games.
2nd grade began class playing a Five Levels of Fitness board game called Fitnopoly. Since we are still getting ready for JRFH, we also added jump ropes to the game. After the board game, we played the game called Knock Over Frosty!! It is a great activity to help students learn how to roll and throw underhand, overhand, and sidearm.
3rd grade this week started to learn and practice some partner jump rope tricks for JRFH. We went over Front-to-Front, Side-to-Side, and Move Over. We then practiced and learned the skill of dribbling. We went over the basic cues of dribbling and I had the students do a couple of activities called Copy Me and Dynamic Dribbling. We finished class playing a classic dribbling game called Knockout.
6th grade started class participating in a Badminton skill review warm-up. We reviewed the 4 main skills of Badminton. We then got to finally spend majority of the class time playing basic Badminton. We played with basic rules and small sided games rotating every point.

7th/8th grade this week started a new quarter. We are now in 3rd quarter. So, this week we went over class procedures and participated in some community building activities called My neighbor and Guess What.

WEEK #20

K4, K5, and 1st grade continued to get ready for JRFH this week!!! We started class reviewing the basic cues and then we practiced jump roping. Next, we manipulated the jump ropes by making shapes and numbers, as well as, math problems with the ropes. To end class, we played a gamed called Leap The River.

2nd grade also continued preparing for JRFH!! We began class by going over the basic cues of jumping rope. We then went over some basic jump rope tricks. These included the bell, ski, straddle, scissor, and one foot jumping. We finished class participating in some long rope games. These included Snake In The Grass, High Fence Low Fence, Tic Toc, Water Wave, Cat & Mouse, and Around The World.
3rd grade started class learning and practicing some jump rope trick including the Bell, Ski, Straddle, Scissors, and Scissor Cross. The class then went over the gross motor skills of rolling and overhand throwing. We played Battleship to practice and reinforce these skills.

6th grade played Dead Bug Tag to get their Muscular Strength and Endurance warm-up out of the way. We then continued learning how to use our bodies by learning more Badminton skills. We went over the ups, overhead clears, and the smash. We then played real Badminton for the first time.
7th/8th grade did some more Volleyball fitness exercises for their personal fitness time. We did VB Twists, VB Over and Unders, and ended with VB sit-ups. The rest of the class time was spent playing small sided Volleyball games!!

WEEK #19

K4, K5, 1st. and 2nd grade all started to get ready for Jump Rope For Heart!!! We started class with a quick cardiovascular activity called Tail Tag (2nd grade played Dead Bug Tag)!! We then stopped and discussed why Fairview School participates in JRFH!!  We then manipulated the jump ropes into hair, pony tails, earrings, elephant noses, and even made the letters of the alphabet. Next we practiced jumping without the rope, then practiced turning, and then we put it together and tried jumping on our own. To end class, we played another round of Tail Tag!!
3rd, 4th, & 5th grade this week also got ready for JRFH! We began class by learning how to measure a jump rope so that we have the right size for jumping. I then had the students jump on their own in their own self space. We then discussed why Fairview participates in JRFH. After that, we discusses some simple jumping techniques and practiced some more. We finished class playing a dodging and fleeing game called Pirates!! Here students tried to collect as many chips as they could and then received points depending on the words they could spell!!!
6th grade started class with the cardiovascular activity of jump roping. We reviewed and practiced the skill of serving for Badminton. The next skill we practiced was called the overhead clears. To end class, we participated in an activity called 2-on-2 Knockout!!!
7th/8th grade this week began class with some cardiovascular jump roping. I then had them review and practice the skills of  under and overhand volleyball serving. We then went over the skills of setting and bumping and had a chance to practice them. We ended class playing Keep It Up!!

WEEK #18

1st & 2nd grade this week started class with a cardiovascular endurance activity called Knockout!!! We then finished class playing a dodging and fleeing game named Cookie Monster!! We also discussed what offense, defense, and strategy means!!
4th & 5th grade this week began class with a muscular strength & endurance warm-up by exercising with real dumb bells. We learned various muscles and what exercises actually make them more fit!! We then practiced the skills of rolling, throwing, and catching in an activity called Battleship.
6th grade this week also used dumb bells to improve their muscular strength & endurance!! We learned the names of certain muscles and exercises to make them more fit!! We then started our first day of Badminton. We started with some simple racket and birdie drills. We did ups and super ups to improve our hand-eye coordination. We then practiced and tried the skill of serving. We finished class playing Reverse Dead Fish!!
7th/8th grade's warm-up this week started with dumb bells. We learned various muscles and what exercises help them to get more fit. We then started our Volleyball unit. This week we started with the under and overhand serve. We also talked about why the serve is so important. We finished class playing Dead Fish!!

WEEK #17

K5, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade this week participated in a station course. Here we combined physical fitness with physical skill practice. All the students were divided evenly into the 6 stations that were set up throughout the gym. Every 5 minutes, the students rotated to a different physical fitness or physical skill practice station. The kids loved participating!
4th and 5th grade began class with a cardiovascular endurance and throwing game called Chaos. We then finished class using the cage ball to play Battle Ball, an activity used to help develop the students' muscular strength and endurance.
7th/8th grade finished taking their fitness tests by doing their curl-up test (ME). We then finished class using the cage ball and playing Battle Ball.
