WEEK # 4

K4 thru 2nd grade's ASAP was called Body Parts. We then discussed the meaning of cooperation and teamwork. Then they had an opportunity to play activities where they could put cooperation and teamwork into action. We played Scat Cat and Mosquito Tag.  With these games students were required to help each other get back into the activity. At the end of class, we discussed how if felt to be helped or not helped.

3rd thru 8th grade's ASAP were 4 corners (3rd thru 5th) and Perimeter Fitness (6th thru 8th). We continued our Respect and Sportsmanship focus with Problem Solving activities. The students had the opportunity to play the game called Maze! The students had to work together to solve the maze puzzles! The previous two lessons had to be incorporated in order to help solve the problems. We finished class discussing times we would have problems to solve in the real world.

K4 thru 2nd grade's ASAP was called Body Parts. Our fitness time was spent going over the 3 jobs of our muscles and we did a movement story called Ladders. We then got the bean bags out and went over some body awareness activities. We ended class playing a game called Hot Foot where we reviewed self space and body awareness concepts.

3rd thru 8th grade's ASAP was Cooperative Workout Cards (3rd thru 5th) and It's In The Cards (6th thru 8th). We continued to work on Respect and Sportsmanship and discussed why communication was important for good teamwork.  3rd thru 5th grade played an activity called Connecting Eyes and 6th thru 8th played an activity called Car and Driver. Verbal and Non-verbal communication was required for both activities. We finished by processing where outside of the gym verbal and nonverbal communication would be needed.

K4 thru 2nd grade started learning about Self Space! Our ASAP was called I see... You see... We then discussed what Self Space is and demonstrated it  through a song called Ain't to Proud to Beg. We used deck rings to practice getting equipment safely. We also did some simple manipulation of the deck rings. We ended class playing a game called Got Cha. With this game, we practiced playing an activity while move around and staying in our Self Space.

3rd thru 8th grade started the year discussing Respect and Sportsmanship. Our ASAP was called Bumper Cars (with some Hula Hoop manipulation). We then specifically discussed Inclusion. What it is, Why it's important, and how it affects people. We put this into practice with an activity called Musical Hoops. We ended class discussing where they see the effects of good and bad inclusion.

For the first week of school, K4 thru 8th grade went over the classroom expectations and routines. Of course, my students didn't sit the whole time. We learned through movement. The upper grades played an ice breaker activity called True or False and/or Walk or Talk. We got to know each other while discussing the reasons why exercise is important to good health. We also practiced the basics of classroom routines through the game Everyone's It Tag. The lower grades practiced the basic stop and go procedures, where we enter and leave the gymnasium, and the PBIS expectations of the gymnasium while playing basic movement activities.
